Chapter 12

From an Unhealthy Diet to a Drug Test

There were two things that Joe Eisman refused to do: he never called Conboy “Commander,” and he never answered Conboy after the first yell.

“Eisman,” Commander Conboy shouted, grumpily.

Detective Eisman sauntered across the foyer, as though he hadn’t noticed.

“Eisman! Are you deaf? I’m talking to you.”

As if he had all the time in the world, Joe turned to face pear-shaped Conboy, marveling at how such a thick layer of fresh dandruff could descend on his narrow shoulders, between check-in and lunchtime.

“Really? What were you talking to me about?”

Conboy shoved thick spectacles further up his greasy nose.

“What the hell happened in the Seraph case?”

Joe scratched his head, with a bemused expression.

“Excuse me?”

“The Seraph case…what’s going on with it?”

He chuffed, like an angry pig, scraping his shoes against the worn vinyl of the foyer.

“The usual,” Joe replied, nonchalantly. “I’d like to hang out and talk about testifying in court and making arrests and police work and shit you know nothing about, but Roll Call is starting.”

Casually, he continued his stroll into the Roll Call room. Conboy’s jaw dropped. Dumbfounded by Joe’s seeming lack of respect for his rank, he almost danced with anger on the tips of his self-consciously shiny shoes. But, Conboy was Conboy. He didn’t have the guts to call him on it.

“Good evening, ladies and gentleman. I’m Lieutenant Jane Calamitty,” the female officer leading Roll Call said. “I, and I alone, will be your acting Watch Commander, for the next week, while your Watch Commander takes a short vacation. Since I’ve been transferred from the Auto Theft unit, I’m no stranger to Detective work. I’ve seen and done it all. Do not think you are dealing with someone who hasn’t been there and done that. On my watch there will be no bullshit overtime, no con jobs, no late reports or court deviations, or I’ll be all over you and you will take time!”

It was a normal intro for a new woman leader, hard line and no nonsense. It was also unnecessary and over-the-top. Sighing, Eisman turned his attention to the wanted posters on the wall, slouching in his chair and turning his back to the Lieutenant. In a barely audible monotone voice, he started to talk.

“Both impressive and intimidating,” he murmured. “You say you’ve done it all, Lt. Calamitty? Share a few examples of the shining police work that caps your illustrious career! You know, major cases of the newsworthy variety, that not only make your prior statements credible but instill in us lowly Detectives the respect you so desperately seek.”

This rambling banter had been spoken just loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. Calamitty glared at Joe, though she didn’t see his lips move she knew it came from him. She wondered whom the ballsy detective was that would get in her face at a Roll Call, where she was in charge.

“Detective, what is your name and what is your problem?”

“Name is Eisman. My problem is I can’t
